Tower blocks framed against the Pennines
Rising out of cracked tarmac like warning signs
Containers suffused with pale anxiety
Concrete tombstones for the death of society
Tower blocks dark against black hills
Drunken threats, yellow teeth and sleeping pills
Chrome stubs from a hill see at a distance
The jagged teeth of a broken system
Tower blocks framed against dark moorland
Straining with the weight of lost dreams
Rectangles designed by distant architects
Now so devoid of utopian context

Do you feel the system breathing for you?
It is an eternally ravenous and ever-expanding amorphous entity
Of unstoppable malice and avarice.
Do you feel the system breathing for you?
Great slavering jaws constantly locking on, hagfish-like,
To suck in incalculable profits to feed the greasy, bloated body,
Shitting out vast hate-showers of crime, addiction and poverty.
Do you feel the system breathing for you?
The system is multi-tentacled,
Punctuated by profuse and drooling circular mouth-holes
And foul, ever-monitoring eyes.
Each writhing tendril fastens itself to the base of every willing human skull
And spreads pseudopods the length of every buckled spine.
The system is rapacious, self-destructive,
Feeding, gorging on death and violence.
The system is invisible to those who are drained by it,
Their vampire teeth glinting in the pale light of your smartphone.
Regardless of future extinction, the machine rolls on.
What is this sickness that seeks to infiltrate every corner
Of our waking and sleeping lives?
It is the madness of the system as it belches forth multi-variations on the commodity theme.
Desire for commodity equals behaviour modification,
Control masquerading as choice and freedom.
Do you still feel the pulse beating in your body?
Do you sense the potential of your personality throbbing wildly in your heart?
Never lose it. Keep fighting.
Keep gnashing your teeth at the edifice of free-market lunacy
That looms hungrily over your puny body.
Keep thinking, independent of the hegemony machine,
One step ahead of the dead.
Do you feel the system breathing upon your face?
Malicious, avaricious, without sentiment or empathy.
Regardless of future extinction, the machine rolls on.
Regardless of your life and death, the machine rolls on
And on
And on
And on.
